Olivia Newton-John's Daughter Defends Graphic "Horror Film" Video As "Artist's Job"

Olivia Newton-John's daughter defends graphic video

People are talking bans for the music video because they feel the video legitimizes or glorifies suicide.

"The video shows Chloe appearing to snort a powdery substance, lying in a bed with slit wrists and holding a gun to her head. After the death of Amy Winehouse, the project has been steeped in controversy.
'It's so funny -- I don't think I went that far,' says Chloe. 'It was a metaphor for what I was going through, so I wasn't like, 'Yeah I want to slit my wrist or put some electrical devices in a bathtub.' It was just about being in a lot of pain and dying inside in front of the one you love and them not noticing what you're going through.'
Still, after receiving such strong negative feedback, Chloe released a more positive video with the intention showing her fans that she's 'alive and well.'
What do you think of the video? Is it art, or is it going too far?"

She says it is "the artist's job to challenge ideas."  Maybe she can find some inspiration or relief in her Dad's teepee.

  1. Damn. Videos are borked. Pardon me while I attempt to troubleshoot.

  2. Either that or the internet gods are sparing you. Because the videos are pretty awful.

  3. Looks like a Youtube issue. Only time will heal that.

  5. Not my taste in music but that aside, I see no big deal about the video. The images in the video went along with the message of the song about how much love can hurt. It isn't like the girl invented suicide. Mainstream tv shows routinely and graphically show violence and/or its aftermath...CSI, Bones, etc. It is very strange she felt compelled to release a video showing her fans she was ok, that's like the mutilated corpses standing up at the end of CSI and saying "we were acting, we're ok."

Frankly, I think the routine use (and I do mean use) of women in a lot of music videos as nothing more than skanky whores fawning over the male musician and making it look cool and/or glamorous, is a lot more damaging imagery than what is in this video.

  6. I would whack myself too if my husband/wife/bf/gf was taking a 'dump' while I was trying to bathe.

Am I the only one who answers these things "straight?" Gah! Here I was hoping for some intelligent banter on interesting subjects! (Although Pep's link to the plastic surgery page was fascinating; and, that was more disturbing than the video.)

/me Googles some one-liner pages for future posting.
    :p

  8. Yay! Videos are back.

@ Pep: Yeah, it's funny, but that's the thing I keyed in on *WAY* more than the content or theme of the video. I couldn't take my eyes off her face and my mind off the idea that this was a 25-year-old woman who'd had enough surgery of a type to make her look 55. That was the part I found disturbing.

The other thing that caught my interest is the fact that her father, former actor Matt Lattanzi, lives off the grid in a teepee and that's where this clearly troubled young woman has to go to unburden herself and get the following fatherly advice, "Uhhhhhhh. That's why I live in a teepee." (Seen in the last "Toxic" video.)

    @ Storm: ;-)

@ L: Yeah, I'm with you. This is not the worst I've seen and I believe there is a lot to be said for the value of a parent putting images like this into perspective or censoring them until a more appropriate time. Assuming there is a parental figure involved. As for the adults...grow up.

  9. She seems to be trying for a Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie kind of image, all of which have succeeded with much more disturbing videos. I'm more creeped out by the images of "Closer" than the images in this video, though Lattanzi's music is more disturbing, but not for the reasons she's going for. Oy.

  10. I actually think her video is PERFECT for forums. Her character in the video seems like the ultimate attention whore.

  11. I'm at work so can't see the video...will take a look tonight.

I suppose it is like anything else in life...perspective. Can art not go too far?

I suppose if you are a parent who found your child/teen/young adult dead, bled out from the wrist, sporting a cocaine mustache, it might trigger some PTSD, or just raw emotion that causes you to react to the literal image and not the metaphorical message. I don't think all reactions are based on a lack of maturity. The depiction of suicide as art does not appeal to me, but I exercise my amazing superpowers and turn the channel. It is a gift. Don't be jealous.

As for the "use" of females in videos fawning over rock stars while dressed like skanky whores, well, they sign consent and release papers so I don't think they are being used. But then I am a believer in taking responsibility for your own actions. Maybe they watched too much suicide art and decided fuck it, might as well dress like a skanky whore and make a few bucks before I bleed myself out. Or maybe they are skanky whores. Or maybe they are all performance artist releasing their inner attention whore.

No Oprah Winfrey? Does this mean we do not have a LeeHere Absent TV network to look forward to?

  12. RE: Whacking yourself if the S.O. takes a dump while you are trying to bathe...

    Wrong target. Whack the dumper.

  13. We can't just go around whacking people who give in to the call of nature. I shudder to think of it, but some people only have a single bathroom in their home.

So if he had been giving a shit instead of taking a shit, the whole premise of the video would have been altered...interesting...

    Well played, Ima.

Don't count my complete world media domination out just yet, Ima.

    @ L: "Whack the dumper."

I feel a banner, sig or t-shirt coming on.

  15. I am adamantly against one-bathroom buildings and homes. It's just wrong. That said, there's always the kitty litter or the puppy papers.
